Artist Statement
As an artist, my work is informed by a deep fascination with the ways in which visual images and structures impact the spaces in which they live. Contradictions and conflicts are themes that I explore through the lens of dark humor and satire, intentionally avoiding any strong alignment or definitive stance as it gives me more creative freedom to indulge in fringe ideas taken to absurdist levels. Rather than providing clear answers, my work acknowledges the presence of uncontrollable elements in our lives, serving as a cathartic exercise that challenges viewers to confront their own beliefs and assumptions. I strive to create work that exists in a moral gray zone, reflecting the opinions and policies of the world around us without taking sides on any specific topic.
With this in mind one of my primary objectives is to confuse viewers, causing them to question whether my work is intended to make fun of or promote a particular stance. I am fascinated by the ways in which art can be perceived as both comedic and distasteful depending on the individual context being brought into a space, and I am interested in the different types of reactions these confrontations can provoke. By avoiding to provide a concrete moral stance on a subject, my work is a reflection of the spectrum of society, a conglomeration of the opinions that I observe in person, in the news, and online.
Visually I draw from approaches seen in advertisements for selling products and incorporate colors associated with children's books and propaganda posters. The result is a weird circus of contradictions coexisting within the same space. I use a variety of techniques and strategies including playing with spatial elements to challenge viewers' preconceptions and incorporating different materials and mediums to add depth and texture to interactions. By curating specific elements I encourage people to engage with my work not only in a physical way, but also as an observer to other people’s interactions and reactions. Overall, my goal is to create multi-dimensional visual narratives that invite viewers to think about the themes of morality, politics, and power.
